Hrpinia is located in the central-eastern sector of Campania, does not have an outlet to the sea and has an exclusively mountainous-hilly territory. The oldest human traces date back to the Paleolithic and are attributable to sporadic groups of hunters. In the 5th century BC. an Oscan-speaking Samnite tribe, called “Irpini”, occupied the entire area. Their name deriving from 'hirpus,' meaning wolf, which inhabited these lands, was preserved until the Roman era, of which we still have evidence through the construction of roads and bridges that remain to the present. In medieval times, with the Lombard invasion, the territories were subject to the Duchy of Benevento, subsequently conquerred by the Principality of Salerno. In the Angevin era they were separated to form an additional principality under the Kingdom of the Bourbons of Naples.
